News Flash! At each OTR Conference, the highlight is the presentation of the OTR Lifetime Achievement Award. Previous recipients have included WPAQ radio founder Ralph Epperson, noted author and folkmusic historian Dr. Charles K. Wolfe, and legendary performers Wade and Julia Mainer. OTR is pleased to announce that this year's recipient will be David Freeman, in recognition of his role as founder of County Records and County Sales, which continues its emphasis on documenting and preserving both historical and contemporary old-time music and making it available for listening, research, and broadcasting. The award will be presented as part of the Wednesday evening (May 30) festivities that will include live performances. |
Do You Enjoy Old Time Music?...
Join us for the 2001 Old Time Music & Radio Conference
Meet and network with peers and colleagues from all corners of the Old Time Music world - musicians, broadcasters, promoters, record label representatives, journalists, dancers and many others - to discuss and chart the past, present and future of the music.
Take advantage of the expertise and knowledge that will be available in the following scheduled workshops:
Activities on Wednesday will include a keynote address by Wayne Martin of the North Carolina Arts Council, in addition to an evening of performances that will include presentation of the Conference's Lifetime Achievement Award to County Records President and Founder Dave Freeman (see announcement above).
Thursday will feature the opportunity to tour the studios of Mount Airy's historic radio station, WPAQ-AM, and visit with the Epperson Family, who have owned and operated the station since it signed on the air in 1948. Also on Thursday will be an afternoon devoted to an Exhibit Hall and "Wildcat Sessions" to deal with issues that arise on an impromptu basis.
The conference will wrap up on Thursday evening with a BBQ Supper and Dance that will serve as a perfect lead-in to the annual Mount Airy Fiddler's Convention, which begins the next day. Why not plan on spending the whole week in Mount Airy this year?
