For two full decades, beginning in 1974 and ending in 1993, the Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music sponsored and operated the Brandywine Mountain Music Convention, a three-day festival held annually in mid-July (and it usually turned out to be the hottest and/or wettest weekend of the year) and devoted to presenting not only the 'source musicians' still living who had inspired a new generation of devotees to traditional American old time and string band music, but also the best of that new generation such as the Highwoods String Band.
The festival was held at four different locations over the 20 years of its existence:
Newlin Grist Mill(1974-1975), Concordville, Pennsylvania
(Private Farm on the Brandywine Creek)(1976), Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania
Pleasant Hill Farm(1977-1990), Fair Hill, Maryland
Salem County Fair Grounds(1991-1993), Woodstown, New Jersey
A series of LP recording from the first dozen years of the festival was produced on the
Heritage and Rounder labels, and these albums are long out of print. In 1999, the Brandywine Friends
collaborated with noted old time musician and producer Ray Alden to produce a retrospective of
the best tracks from these rare LPs in Compact Disc (CD) format on Ray's own Chubby Dragon
label.
The 30 tracks on the CD (see Track Lisitng, below) feature vintage, live recordings (available nowhere else) of some of the greatest traditional American musicians, most of whom have long since passed on. The CD is available directly from the Brandywine Friends for $15.00 per copy, plus $2.00 shipping per order. To order one or more copies, send your check or money order (payable to 'BFOTM' - please do not send cash), along with your name, address and telephone number to:
